What is Halq and taqsir?

Halq and taqsir (Shaving and trimming) are the last rituals of Umrah; every pilgrim must perform them. It is essential for men to either cut or shave their heads, but women can only trim their hair for the completion of Umrah.

Purpose of cutting or shaving hair

It signifies the completion of Umrah. It indicates that by worshipping Allah Almighty, you are cleansed from worldly impurities and your sins are removed.

In Quran Allah says:

"You will surely enter al-Masjid al-Haram, if Allah wills, in safety, with your heads shaved and [hair] shortened, not fearing [anyone]…”

Surah Al-Fath (48:27)

Rules of cutting hair for Men

It is permissible to cut or shave hair after Umrah.

  • Cutting hair: Men cut their hair about 2 -3 cm starting from the right side of the head.
  • Shaving a full head: If men shave their full head, it is more virtuous

Rules of cutting hair for women

Women can only cut hair about one fingertip length (1-2 cm). Shaving the head for women is strictly prohibited.
